The English Department of Ness Wadia College of Commerce offers English as a compulsory and Open Elective subject to students of B.Com. in the first and second year of the degree college. The Department also offers newly introduced subjects such as Mastering English for Professional Purposes (Ability Enhancement Course), Mass Communication through English, and Business English to further strengthen students’ language and professional communication skills.
Technology-mediated task-based group activities, classroom presentations, discussions and workshops, in addition to teaching by lecture, peer learning, project report writing, and periodical assessment, are part of the program.
The Department of English is the most vibrant department in the college as it continuously organizes various literary and language activities throughout the year. It keeps pace with the important changes that have been taking place in English as a subject and language of communication. While it already engages Spoken English Courses and orientation program for teachers, it has also started short modular courses in Business English and Certificate Courses in English at the newly set up – Center for English and Foreign Languages (CEFL). The CEFL is a recognized training Centre for the Cambridge ESOL Business English Examinations.
The CEFL Courses develop learners’ confidence and skills which are essential in a new era of rapid cultural and technological development and exchange. Keeping pace with modern technology, the department has thus set up a well-equipped digital language laboratory.
The Department of English boasts of having the departmental library with a rich collection of titles related to English literature and language as most of the books were purchased under the Minor Research Projects carried out by the department members
